Celebrating World Kindness Day

November 12, 2021 by Meals on Wheels

World Kindness Day is celebrated every year on November 13th to inspire positivity and to encourage kindness around the globe. It was first introduced in 1997 by the World Kindness Movement, through a coalition of NGO’s and is now recognized internationally. It is also a day devoted to the potential of both large and small acts of kindness, in order to bring people together. The possibilities are endless to treat each other, yourself, and the world with a little more kindness every day. For some wonderful ideas check out the guide in the references section below! With every kind gesture you can make a difference. In fact, science has shown that kindness promotes prosocial behavior, can reduce negative thoughts and depression, and can increase empathy towards others (Layous et al 2012; Millard, 2020). Kindness also allows people to form a bridge of understanding in order to build relationships, to connect with others and to feel good about the work they are doing for their communities.

At Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, we believe in the power of kindness in order to make a difference for our clients and the communities we serve. It is not only about the nutritious food we provide but about the kind gestures from volunteers and staff that give seniors the interaction they need. Additionally, we are committed to the health, well-being, and independence of the individuals we work with through the lens of respect and kindness.

If you feel inspired by World Kindness Day, you can help our mission to keep Maryland’s aging and homebound communities nourished, safe, and connected by either donating or volunteering with our organization. We consider volunteerism to be the cornerstone of Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland because it truly makes the difference for a senior aging in place and remaining independent. Additionally, giving back to a good cause is also great for you! We often hear from our volunteers and generous donors that they receive as much as they give.

It is important to remember that being kind can truly make a difference for someone else in your life or community. We are encouraged everyday by our remarkable team of volunteers, donors, and staff at MOWCM who prioritize kindness and lead with compassion for the communities and individuals we serve. We invite you to join our cause and benefit from giving back to others in need!
