Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27, 2022 by Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland acknowledges the importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, on January 27th, 2022. The United Nations General Assembly and other organizations around the globe also recognize this date as one of remembrance in honor of the anniversary and liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. This day marks a time for commemoration of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of others who lost their lives to violence.

Holocaust Remembrance Day was officially proclaimed in November 2005 and is officially recognized by the United Nations as a day in which member states can share in their responsibility to address the trauma that Nazi crimes perpetuated. It is also serves as an opportunity to promote education and research surrounding genocides, in order to strengthen the resolve to end hateful ideologies. (Please refer to the links below for additional reading/resources).

On this day, MOWCM can also reaffirm as an organization our own commitment to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of intolerance that may lead to targeted group violence. We believe in inclusivity and honor our founders Ernestine McCollum and Beatrice Strouse, who modelled our meal delivery after the one established in London after World War II. Our founders, our employees, volunteers and supporters today share the same conviction that providing nutritious meals for the aging and disabled in the community should be set forth with equity.

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland Equity Statement:  Our mission, to keep homebound aging adults, all adults, no matter their race, religion, or sexual orientation, living safely and independently at home for as long as they choose to do so.   As we carry out our work each day, we see first-hand the inequities that exist in our community, inequities that have recently become even more visible as a result of the pandemic — inequities in income, housing, access to nutritious food, and proper health care. Through our work, we strive to close the gap created by these inequities. (You can read our full equity statement online at www.mealsonwheelsmd.org).
