Caregiver Stories: Peace of Mind for Tom

As the seasons begin to change and cooler days approach, I am reminded of the strength, resilience, and determination we see every day in the older adults and the caregivers we serve.

Tom’s parents, who are in their late 80s, live independently in a senior community in Towson. While they enjoy being part of the community, preparing nutritious meals has become increasingly challenging, and they need a little extra support to remain independent at home.

As the only child living in state, Tom has always been devoted to helping his parents. But, after being relocated to central Virginia for work, he faced the challenge of supporting his aging.

Fortunately, shortly after moving, Tom learned about Meals on Wheels. Now, Tom’s parents receive daily nutritious meals, friendly visits, and wellness checks from our dedicated volunteers.

“I am thankful for the support that Meals on Wheels provides,” Tom says. “It is reassuring to know that I can count on someone to check in on my parents and make sure they are okay.”

Like many caregivers, Tom worries about his parents daily and is grateful for Meals on Wheels volunteers who deliver meals and provide reassurance through regular check-ins, even during the cold gray days of winter.  This was never truer than it was during January’s major storm, when despite the weather, meals were delivered as scheduled.

Every year, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland prepares for snowstorms, dangerous cold, and other severe winter weather, by assembling emergency meal kits. These boxes, filled with shelf-stable food, are an essential lifeline on the rare occasion when regular deliveries are delayed or temporarily interrupted due to inclement weather.

Together, we can ensure the reliable service and peace of mind that defines Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland can continue.
