Our Organization
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is one of the largest and oldest continuously operating, non-profit, home-delivered meal programs in the United States. Our approach, to provide nutritious meals, personal contact, and support services distinguishes us from other programs, and truly makes us More than a Mealsm. As a premiere provider of aging services, an innovator in a growing sector, and a long-term government partner, MOWCM is well positioned to lead the way in transforming services and improving outcomes for vulnerable older adults. We have expertise in senior community menu planning and meal production and delivery, delivering 1.4 million meals annually. Our service to over 4,500 clients per year demonstrates competency in both understanding and meeting the unique needs of older adults. MOWCM also provides a myriad of support services designed to optimize health and keep people living independently in their homes. Innovation has been the hallmark of our successful growth as we strive to fulfill our mission through our More than a Mealsm approach. As the needs of the aging community evolve, and the service industry adapts, MOWCM has been at the forefront, adding new programs and services such as grocery assistance, home repairs, targeted case management, and health care coordination. Throughout our history of serving aging adults, we have taken a community approach to service delivery and established a strong foundation for volunteerism, partnership, and in-kind support.

Our History
Two Baltimore women, Ernestine McCollum and Beatrice Strouse, shared a conviction to provide nutritious meals for the aging and disabled, a genuine need in the area. Committed to filling that need, in early 1960, they replicated a meal delivery program that originated in London after World War II. On October 3rd that same year, the first 10 Meals on Wheels clients were served a hot meal lovingly prepared and delivered by a handful of dedicated volunteers.
Today, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is one of the oldest nonprofit, home-delivered meal programs in the country, serving more than 1.3 million meals annually to nearly 3,000 clients.
Our Approach
Our More than a meal™ approach of nutritious meals, personal contact, customized service planning, and safety-net services, is what distinguishes us from other home-delivered meal programs.
Thanks to the sustained commitment of our volunteers, staff, and donors, we are one of the largest Meals on Wheels programs in the country, and one that offers a wide array of support services.
Each day, more than 27 Meals on Wheels vans and 1,800 volunteers are on the road to deliver More than a meal™.
Our Clients
By providing nutritious meals to people who are homebound and unable to shop or prepare their own meals—because of age or disability—Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland supports healthy, independent living and quality of life for people who choose to age in place.
By helping the aging and disabled remain living independently in their homes, Meals on Wheels supports their continued integration into the social fabric of the community, prevents premature institutionalization, and allows them to age in their communities with dignity.
Our Equity Statement
Our mission, to keep homebound aging adults, all adults, no matter their race, religion, or sexual orientation, living safely and independently at home for as long as they choose to do so. As we carry out our work each day, we see first-hand the inequities that exist in our community that have recently become even more visible as a result of the pandemic — in income, housing, access to nutritious food, and proper health care. Through our work, we strive to close the gap created by these inequities.
