Delores is a 76-year-old SNAP beneficiary who is legally blind, so she signed up for the Home Delivered Meal Program more than a year ago. “I called Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and let them know that I needed support. I wanted to start getting meals, so they took my application and said that I would be eligible to receive the meals via SNAP benefits. They did everything for me,” said Delores.
Before signing up for Meals on Wheels, Delores had to call food banks, and they would provide her with canned goods, but that wasn’t the right solution she needed. “I was calling different food banks and was getting food in cans, but that didn’t work for me, as I was unable to prepare and cook the food for myself.”
Since joining Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Delores has seen major improvements in her diet. Now that she’s eating healthier meals, she has seen her energy level increase due to the nutritious and balanced meals provided. “It has improved my life a lot. It comes right to my door, they make sure I get my food, and I really enjoy the meals. They are very nice, the people that bring me my meals. It’s on time and just how I like it,” said Delores.
Delores also participates in the organization’s Call Connections program. Twice a week, she will receive a call from a volunteer who will not only check in on her to see how she’s doing but will engage in conversation as a way of reducing social isolation. “When they call me, I’m able to give them an update on how I’m doing, if everything is okay, or if there’s anything that I need. It’s great knowing that you have someone to talk to and share ideas and what’s happening in your life,” said Delores.
