Helping Older Adults Stay Safe at Home
For many older adults, home represents independence, comfort, and familiarity. But everyday spaces—from a bathroom without a grab rail to a set of stairs without a secure railing—can become more difficult to navigate as we age.
Fall prevention is about creating an environment where older adults have the support they need to continue living safely and independently. At Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, that support takes many forms.
Nutrition That Supports Well-Being
Good nutrition plays an important role in overall health and strength. Through our Home Delivered Meals program, aging and homebound adults receive nutritious meals delivered directly to their homes, helping them maintain a balanced diet without the challenges of shopping for or preparing meals on their own.
An Extra Set of Eyes
Our drivers and volunteers do more than deliver meals. Their visits also provide an opportunity to notice when something may not be quite right.
If a client has experienced a fall or there is another concern, drivers can report a change in condition through Mobile Meals. In an emergency, they can also call 911 to help make sure a client receives immediate assistance.
Making Home Safer
Through our Home Repair Program, eligible clients can receive safety modifications such as grab rails and railings that can make moving around the home safer and easier.
There are also simple steps older adults and caregivers can take to help reduce fall risks:
- Keep walkways clear of clutter and loose rugs.
- Make sure stairs, hallways, and bathrooms are well lit.
- Use grab bars and secure handrails where needed.
- Wear supportive, non-slip footwear.
- Talk with a healthcare provider about medications that may cause dizziness or affect balance.
Small Steps, Meaningful Support
Fall prevention doesn’t always require a major change. A safer walkway, nutritious meals, a grab rail, or someone checking in can all make a difference.
From the meals we deliver to the homes we help make safer, our goal is to help aging and homebound adults maintain their independence and feel safer in the place they call home.
