Supporting Mental Health in Older Adults
October 10th is World Mental Health Awareness Day, a reminder that mental well-being is just as important as physical health—especially as we age. Many older adults face challenges such as social isolation, grief, or health concerns that can impact their emotional wellness.
At Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, every meal represents not just nourishment, but a reminder that someone cares. A friendly visit from a volunteer or a driver, or even a simple conversation, can ease loneliness and provide the social support that helps older adults thrive. Our Call Connections program allows volunteers to check in with clients through friendly phone calls, offering companionship and conversation even when a visit isn’t possible. With our Kibble Connection program, we partner with the Maryland SPCA to deliver pet food to our clients furry friends. This helps support the health and happiness of both pets and clients. These programs, alongside our meal deliveries, ensure that older adults receive not only nutrition but also the care, connection, and community they deserve.
It’s important to break the stigma around discussing mental health. Encouraging open conversations, staying socially connected, and seeking support when needed can make a big difference. This week, let’s honor the strength of older adults by raising awareness, offering compassion, and ensuring that mental health care is accessible to all.
Together, with care and community, we can help older adults age with dignity, purpose, and peace of mind.
Join us in supporting older adults—volunteer, donate or spread the word about Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and the importance of mental health awareness.
