Staying Steady: Supporting Fall Prevention for Older Adults

For many older adults, home represents independence, comfort, and familiarity. But everyday spaces—from a bathroom without a grab rail to a set of stairs without a secure railing—can become more difficult to navigate as we age.

That’s why fall prevention is about more than simply being careful. It’s about creating an environment where older adults have the support they need to continue living safely and independently in the communities they call home.

At Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, that support takes many forms.

Nutrition That Supports Well-Being

Good nutrition plays an important role in overall health and strength. Through our Home Delivered Meals program, aging and homebound adults receive nutritious meals delivered directly to their homes, helping them maintain a balanced diet without the challenges of shopping for or preparing meals on their own.

An Extra Set of Eyes

Our drivers and volunteers do more than deliver meals. Their visits also provide an opportunity to notice when something may not be quite right.

If a client has experienced a fall or there is another concern, drivers can report a change in condition through Mobile Meals, helping our team stay informed and respond appropriately. In an emergency, drivers and volunteers can also call 911 to make sure a client receives immediate assistance.

That simple knock at the door can sometimes make an important difference.

Making Home Safer

Preventing falls also means looking at the home itself. Through our Home Repair Program, eligible clients can receive safety modifications such as grab rails and railings that can make everyday movement around the home safer and easier.

From the meals we deliver to the homes we help make safer, each service is part of a larger goal: helping aging and homebound adults maintain their independence.

Because sometimes, preventing a fall starts with having the right support already in place.
